A trephine is a cylindrical blade used for cutting holes. In horses, the trephine is used for exposure to the frontal sinus for

• Sinusitis & sinus empyema
• Neoplasm in sinus
• Foreign body, cyst or parasite in the sinus cavity
• Fracture of frontal bone

After a V-shape skin incision and separating skin from underlying tissues, the trephine is applied with repeated rotary motion to remove a circular bone disc.
